Kimi K3 sends chip stocks into a bear market
Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, the 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model unveiled last week at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, has erased more than $3.3 trillion in global semiconductor market value in a matter of days. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 20% below its late-June peak, crossing into bear-market territory — the worst weekly rout for chipmakers since April 2025. Moonshot's model approaches frontier coding and reasoning performance at $3 per million input tokens, versus $10 for Claude Fable 5, and investors are now openly asking whether the roughly $700 billion hyperscalers plan to spend on AI infrastructure this year assumes a level of GPU demand that a cheaper Chinese model just undercut. Notably, TSMC raised its 2026 capex guidance to $60–64 billion the same week, suggesting the underlying demand picture may be sturdier than the stock reaction implies.
OpenAI expands its cybersecurity coalition
ReliaQuest joined OpenAI's Daybreak Cyber Partner Program on July 20, gaining access to OpenAI's frontier models to speed vulnerability detection and patching within its GreyMatter platform. Daybreak now includes Palantir, Cisco, Accenture, CrowdStrike, Darktrace, Sophos, and SoftBank — a sign that frontier labs are racing to embed themselves in enterprise security stacks as adversaries increasingly use AI to automate attacks. Separately, Accenture is acquiring IndX to expand AI-powered manufacturing tools for industrial clients through its Siemens Digital Industries partnership.
Also this week
South Korea unveiled an $880 billion, 10-year plan covering semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and robotics, with Samsung and SK Hynix alone committing $518 billion to new fab capacity — a direct hedge against the same China-driven competitive pressure rattling US chip stocks. On the security front, AI-related cybersecurity acquisitions have nearly tripled this year, from 10 deals in the first half of 2025 to 29 in the first half of 2026, while CISA has warned that autonomous agents are opening new gaps in identity and access management. Microsoft's July Patch Tuesday, meanwhile, used AI assistance to fix a record 570 vulnerabilities in a single release.
The takeaway
The Kimi K3 shock is less about one model beating benchmarks and more about pricing: a Chinese lab delivering near-frontier performance at a third of the cost is forcing markets to reprice the assumption that AI progress requires endless GPU spending. Whether that thesis holds through DeepSeek V4's stable release on July 24 — landing right as Kimi K3's weights go fully free on July 27 — will likely set the tone for AI infrastructure stocks into August.
