AI Trends This Week

Model Releases Come Fast and Furious

Google kicked off September with a wave of AI momentum, launching Gemini 3.8 Flash — its third Flash model in six weeks — alongside a new cybersecurity-focused model built for trusted government and enterprise customers. Google also rolled out agentic video understanding in Gemini, letting the model choose what to watch and at what speed rather than processing video at a fixed rate. The change cuts compute costs by up to 66% and token use by up to 88%.

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, positioned as its most capable models yet for coding and knowledge work.

Meta released Muse Voice Transcribe, a new speech-to-text model available via API that hits state-of-the-art streaming transcription across more than 70 languages.

Perplexity announced a Hybrid mode for its Computer app on Mac, powered by a custom PPLX Qwen 3.8 27B model, including a "Privacy Gate" feature designed to catch personal information before it's sent to the cloud.

Enterprise Agents: Adoption Up, Confidence Mixed

AI agents continue moving deeper into coding, legal work, enterprise search, operations, and multi-tool coordination. A McKinsey "State of AI in 2026" survey found large enterprises scaling agents in one or more business functions jumped from 27% to 40%, while smaller firms held flat at 22%. Separately, 97% of executives say their company deployed AI agents in the past year, and 52% of employees are already using them.

The catch: 79% of organizations report challenges adopting AI, a double-digit jump from 2025, and 54% of C-suite executives admit AI adoption is straining their organizations internally. The emerging advice from practitioners is to stop chasing more agents and instead deploy a few well-scoped ones with tight limits, human review, and clear proof of value.

The Bigger Picture

AI is getting cheaper, more capable, and more embedded in systems that move money, consume electricity, secure networks, and increasingly make decisions with less human oversight. Healthcare AI, autonomous agents, enterprise workflow tools, and trusted search assistants remain the sectors drawing the strongest investment.
